SMOKIN' MONSTERS: LUGOSI AND HIS PIPES

If a dog is a man's best friend, then his pipe (and some would rightly argue his cigars as well) is a very close second. Anyone who has felt the smooth lines and the warmth of a gently-stoked briar full of fragrant and toasty tobacco knows that, in the realm of the tactile, a good pipe can be as sensual as the lines of . . . well, you know what I'm getting at, don't you? It's the guys' version of chocolate.

We see lots of photos of Bela Lugosi with his beloved cigars, but he was also an avid pipe smoker. Here is one of the shots from the series that was taken of him in his home (the 1146 Hudson Ave., Hollywood address?), showing the famous vampire at leisure. He counted collecting stamps and art as hobbies and smoked his cigars and pipes. It would be interesting to know what tobacco types and brands he favored.

In this photo, Lugosi in casual attire poses for the camera. An substantially stocked pipe rack is on the wall to his left.

That's quite an array of briars he had there. Some of those gnarly briars are pretty interesting.
